Using Data in the Classroom ... Part 3

And finally, part 3 to the Data in the Classroom mini-series.   Again, I have chosen this year's professional learning objective to be documenting our learning across the curriculum.  This series has shown how that looks in our classroom. I would love to hear how you manage it in your classroom as well -- who knows, that may be where we head next quarter!

This post involves special events.   How many times do we have assemblies or field trips or little aha moments that are easily forgotten within a few days, definitely after a few months?  Way too many I say.  We've been able to use our camera to document those moments and help solidify the learning we did.  Typically these events are also recorded in the student learning lots (read more about that here) but we document via photographs as well.  So here's to Part 3!

**************************************************

Group Posters.  One boy noticed utility flags sticking up outta the ground near the school a few weeks back. So we stopped and did some detective work to figure out what the flags might be for.  Some still think that it's directions for how to build a roller coaster but for the most part, we decided that under the dirt was a big pipe with electricity and the flags tell construction workers where to not dig (we are getting ready to start construction in the spring. )  As we walked on inside, they noticed a bunch more different colored flags.  Well that prompted an investigation.  We took pics, we discussed, we googled.  One boy went home and asked his dad for info.   We now have a "Whats Going On" poster where we have documented those flags and we're watching daily for any changes to the grounds to see what's going on.  And that dad has come in and talked to us about utility flags and their importance!
You can read about that here and here.

Special Calendar.  I'm excited for this one. Maybe that's why the kids are too, haha.  Our classroom reporter gets the job to help take pictures for special events as well as record them on our special calendar.  It has events on it like birthdays, grandparents day, field trips, the day we all got shoes (Thanks to One Sole Purpose) and guest speakers.
Accompanying pictures sit underneath the calendar until the month is over and we'll move it all up on the way so we can document those special events throughout the year.  I've noticed a few kiddos looking up at the current poster and then discussing some of their observations or checking out past months.   I can't wait to see these posters at the end of the year -- what a visual way to show all that we've done!

Again, I do believe I'm a believer of data and documenting throughout the year.  Hopefully this mini-series has given a well enough peak into our classroom and possibly inspired someone out there.  I am VERY interested though in what data looks like in your room or how you use it!

Using Data in the Classroom...Part 2

So last Wednesday I posted part 1 to this mini-series (go check it out here).   This week I'm posting more about how we use data in the classroom.  I'm not talking about the data we collect as professionals that drive our instruction but instead focusing on the real meat of data and how it's impacting my students.  My goal this year was documenting. Documenting our learning. Documenting the processes. Documenting our achievements.  And that's the data I'm talking about...the data that shows progress and failures, excitement and hardship, the data that is owned by the students. THAT's the data I'm writing about.  And that's the data I love!
 ***************************************

Two other ways that we are documenting through data are through our classroom blog and student learning logs, both new additions to our classroom. Each one carries it's own challenges but the rewards are plentiful!

Classroom blog. Lord help me when I first sent the link to the parents I knew it was a commitment that I had better keep up with! Eeeeek.
It started off pretty bare bones but has quickly grown. I suppose that synonymous to our classroom -- bare bones at the beginning of the year but then as learning starts to take place the room fills up with anchor charts and posters and writing samples. Just the same with the blog.   Right now we've been doing about 2 posts a week.  Eventually I'd love to have the kiddos take charge of what goes on the blog but as it is, I am typing up the blog posts mainly as a way to document what we're doing and share it with the parents and community.  We read through the posts every week or so just so they can see what's being put out there too!  I really wish we were getting more feedback as the kids have loved the TWO comments we've had.  But, at least I'm getting it out there and it seem that we're getting a lot of "views" but no comments (hint hint....come comment on our posts!). Our posts range from pictures they took in the classroom of what they thought was important to their learning to field trips, to exploring dirt.  If we've done it, it's been blogged about!  Go check us out (and leave comments) "Cantrell's Classroom".

Learning Logs.  I'm super proud of these.
One assessment tool that our site does looks at teacher instruction as well as student response logs.  We didn't score very well on response logs, mainly because we weren't using them very much across the curriculum. GUILTY.  I began them this past month as we started up our Science unit on weather.
Let me tell you .... I LOVE THE LEARNING LOGS!  Seriously.  The work that the students are documenting is really impressive and they are internalizing it. I definitely see the students taking ownership of their learning in these logs.  We've used the logs to document our learnings from assemblies, field trips, special speakers and other aha moments.   I love that the kiddos can go back through their logs and remember what we've done this year.

So that's 2 more components to Data in the Classroom.  The next 2 revolve around special events and how we use those moments to document and enhance our learning.

Using Data in the Classroom...Part 1

One of my professional goals this year was to document our learning and time together this year.  I had a grant funded through DonorsChoose last year that provided classroom cameras.  My intentions were for us to document the things we were learning and important events.  Well, last year was a technology learning year for me and the kiddos just worked on how to use the cameras.
This year though...this year is different. WHOA nelly is it different.

We are documenting our learning in Every. Way. Possible.  We use our data binders, we now have learning logs, we do group posters about our learnings, we are implementing Continuous Classroom Improvement to the best of our abilitieswe're sharing, we have a Special Calendar that documents our events, and our classroom blog is finally up and going with student input!

I am loving the outcomes of each of theses components and so here is part one of three posts on Using Data in the Classroom.

**************************************

Data Binders. Yeah I said it....data binders.   That used to be a scary word.  After attending a Jim Shipley conference last year in February I decided to jump in and get them started when I got back.  Granted we only used them for 3 months, the resulting student knowledge of their learning was impressive.  So we started this year by first creating our professional goals and begun tracking our quarterly reading scores, our weekly spelling tests, and our monthly attendance.
We discuss how each of those scores helps us become closer to reaching our professional goals.  The kids know where they need to be at the end of the year as well as set a goal for the next quarter.    We just finished our first quarter assessments and got to update our reading, writing, and math data charts.  We noticed that as a class we had more student proficient across the board and we celebrated.  We also celebrated those that met their goals (we might like to celebrate a little bit).  I was soooo ecstatic to overhear one of my rowdy boys explain his binder to the principal a few weeks ago. He understood what he was talking about and was proud. PROUD. We also set goals for reading and writing.

Continuous Classroom Improvement (CCI).  This is where the data binders come from.  It follows the Baldrige business model in the Plan, Do, Study, Act process.
Each week or cycle we create a class goal or plan.  The students then come up with what they're going to do in order to be successful with that goal.  And then we work on it.  Typically our cycle lasts one week, sometimes longer depending on the skill or how many days we've been in school that week.  We record our progress during that cycle and then study it to see how we have done and what we did that lead to our success (or sometimes our failure).  One learning I've had this year is that our cycles don't have to be academic per se.  In the past, we've chosen a math goal and that's what we've focused on. Each week, choosing a new skill and then figuring out some way to incorporate that work/review into the week's lessons.  It was a chore.  And although I knew it was beneficial and supposed to show great success when used with fidelity.  But man it was a chore!  This year we're doing things a little differently.   I had the idea to use behaviors for the first few weeks. I confess it was just so I could figure out how exactly this was going to look in a split room.   But then I realized that these behaviors we were working on ultimately do affect our academics.  So while we are working on "not talking out" it's positively affecting their learning.  Just the same for "bringing back our daily folders" or "walking quietly in the hallway".   So that's what we're doing.   This year we're focusing each week/cycle on different behaviors.  And let me tell you, it is working!  Again, I am amazed at these kiddos and what they are capable of.  They even decided to use their data binders to track their own success on the cycle.  Genius!  And it was their own idea!

This year I feel I've gotten a great handle on the whole CCI/PDSA stuff and it's doing wonders in our classroom.  The kids are owning it and it's positively affecting their learning. I absolutely love it.

Stay tuned for the next posts on Using Data in the Classroom.  Until then, what's been your experience with student-kept data?

I'm Still Out Here..Somewhere

Who had the brilliant idea of beginning 3 blogs during the summer with full intentions of up-keeping them ALL faithfully even once school started?
Yeah....it was me...I'm brilliant like that.

Ugh.  I have been decently good at updating our classroom blog every few days but I suppose it's because I know I have parents following - plus we're doing some crazy awesome things too!  Wanna check us out and leave some comments?  We would LOVE it!  Check us out here!

Anyways, back to this blog. I'm putting it out there right now that I'm going to commit to at least a weekly post here.  Whether it be an update on what we're doing in the classroom, professional development I've stumbled upon, a complaint that I can't give up or who knows what else....I will have a post up.  Someone track me down and keep me accountable!

But today I'm writing about the "b" word....balance.  Holy moly I wish there was a formula for finding it quickly!  And I wish there was a way to explain to others how to manage it best.   But there's not so every year I'm left to my own resources and muddle my way around to find that  perfect balance.  Here it is, the beginning of 2nd quarter and I feel comfortable that I've found that balance. Although there are definitely days where I am certain that I'm just trying to keep my head above water and am sooooo far behind.  Please tell me I'm not alone on that one.  For the most part, I am able to get my planning done at school...there is minimal grading...I feel more focused both at home and at school. Don't get me wrong, I still have those days but they are fewer than usual.  I must be doing something right.  Not sure what it is.

Some days I think it's that I've been teaching this grade level for 4 years now and kinda have the hang of it.  Other days I think my class is just great and makes my job easier.  I think though that it's a good mix of both.  That and that I know God placed me here (that's a whole other post in itself).  I wouldn't choose any other job - I love where I'm at. I think that plays a huge part in it.  I also attempt to make use of every single plan time I have as much as possible.  Well, and the fact that with 2 little ones at home it doesn't leave much room for doing school work at home. There's just so much going on that I don't know what exactly to contribute it to but I definitely feel that every year I am able to find that balance a bit quicker and maintain it a tad longer than the year before.  Thankfully!

So what is your tip for finding that balance quickly? Or have you found that balance? If not...I promise it'll come to you if only for a day or two but you'll get it ;)

These kiddos AMAZE me.

Well Hello, Almost October!
Wow...yeah, it's really ALMOST OCTOBER!  I'm realizing it is so easy to get caught up in the beginning of the year chaos and leave the 'ol blog behind.  I had all these great intentions of updating the blogs, both this one, our classroom one and my personal family blog.  Well...clearly that hasn't happened here!  My other blogs DO have a post written in mid-August commenting on how absent I would be for the next few months thanks to back to school mayhem.  Boy was i right! This post will be long...and possibly broken into several posts.  We'll see where it goes though!

Let's speed up to where we are today... Sept 28.  (I just want to say WOW again...almost October?!?! That alone probably deserves a big post about how it goes from Aug 1 to Sept 30 in a matter of minutes).   First off, I want to start off by mentioning how blessed I am to be where I am, doing what I love.  I really never knew how amazing teaching could be until this past year and so this year is almost like icing.  I love my building and the staff most of the time (gotta be honest).   God has placed me at my building for reasons I couldn't understand but am so thankful for right now.

This year I'm teaching a 1st & 2nd grade classroom. That's right...both grades...same time.  Everyone outside of the teaching world always asks "Wow, is that hard?" or "How do you teach both grades?"  My answer to both: Yes and it's tricky but I wouldn't change it at all.  I was talking to another teacher today about what a blessing it is to 1)loop with some of my 1st graders from last year but 2) to get to know 2nd grade curriculum which makes my teaching of 1st grade so much more powerful I feel.  I love the split.  Is it hard at times? ABSOLUTELY.  Have I been in tears a time or two? Yep.  Have I changed my schedule again, and again, and again? Ha - definitely.   Do I ever wish that I hadn't volunteered for the split? No way.  I am truly am enjoying the classroom dynamics as well as the challenges.  Now that the first 6 weeks(ish) are finished we are breezing through and making progress.

So back to the original purpose of this post. It never ceases to amaze me what these kiddos can do. You'd think that after 4 years (just 4 years? wow) that i'd have a good grasp of 1st graders. But nope...every year I push a little harder, go deeper and they keep right up with me. Sometimes even pushing me to places I didn't think they knew where they were going.   We created our Class Mission Statement within the first few weeks of the school year.  I was impressed with the thought they put into it...and they GET IT! That's the best part. THEY GET IT!  We started off by figuring out "who are we?" which lead to "what are we doing here?" followed up with "why are we doing that?"  And this is the final result.

Go ahead....say ahhhhh, because it is That Amazing.   We read it a couple times during the week and discuss how what we're doing at that very moment relates to their mission.
Like I said, these kiddos amaze me.

Monday Made It and Room Pics

Today's Monday Made It just may be the last one of the school year. :-/
I'm back in the classroom now. Not on contract time yet but I will be by Friday. My room is almost done....almost! I have a few things to hang and then I'm done.  I think.  Mr. C mentioned that I've done a lot of updating this year, and I have!!  Our building is getting an overhaul in the next few years so I didn't want to buy all new decor just yet so I updated....by means of crafting...all...summer.  At least it feels like it.  Instagram has been a source of lots of inspiration and kept my wish list busy!

But for today's link up I have a few projects.

First, I made a pennant banner and got it hung. Yay! That took a long time but it'll do.
Second, I redid my student check in board. Someone on IG posted theirs and I HAD to redo mine to be more colorful. I love the change!!

Three, super easy but I painted and ribboned cans to hold my pens/markers/pencils etc for the reading table.
And lastly, magnets. Check em out!  Super easy and cute! Can't not make these!!

See?? I told ya there was several MIM projects!  And I'm probably missing something.

Onto classroom pics. I know I posted some in the last post but these are better ;-)
Happy Monday everyone!! My last one of summer, eek!

Behind my teaching table..my little place. Needs new pictures and the C is crooked.
This will house my lesson plans and homework to grade and notes and other piles

This will eventually have our data wall, weekly cycles posted

August....seriously, August!

Anyone else realize that it's August 1st??  It's even 8pm here which is practically midnight, which might as well be Aug 2nd...which means August might as well be half over and then it's LABOR DAY! Holy Moly....seriously. That's what it feels like!  It's August already!  I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking "where did the summer go?" but either way, it's here. Time to embrace it.

I spent most of today at school, but not exactly in my room.  I did manage to redo the bulletin space above the ancient chalkboard and put up my birthday signs.  Trust me, that was tedious work.  AND I only got a little chatty and distracted but it was well worth it.  Our building has several new faces so I made sure to check in often and make sure we weren't all stressing out...yet!

I am soooo excited for this school year.  Without going into too much details on here, our staff is pretty solid, close, and definitely kid-oriented. I feel this year we have a great team that is eager to get started and the vibe around the building is definitely positive. Not that it hasn't been in the past, there's just something different about this year.  I imagine our leadership has a lot to do with it but either way, I'm looking forward to this year.  I foresee HUGE things happening in our building!

So onto my room. As I left today, I took some classroom pictures...just for the blog.  My room isn't done, so don't judge. There are still boxes, empty and half-done bulletins, and piles and piles and piles.  But here's the room. I hope the pictures make sense!

Lunchbox Time

Alright...next week I'm back in the building full time.  Within 3 weeks my oldest starts pre-k two days a week (awwww...).  That means it's time to start thinking about lunches.  On my other blog (She's Got Goals) I wrote about some links I found on pinterest that had some great lunchbox ideas that didn't include sandwhiches.  I thought it might be a good idea to share that here and get your feedback.

Here's the link to my other blog that talks about lunches....go check it out (leave a comment) and then pop back here and let me know what your game plan is for lunches this fall.  Or even tell me what has worked for you in the past?

Totally Unrelated

So does anyone else watch Big Brother?  I'm a FAN!  I'd never go on the show but I love watching it, every year!   I'll warn you, THIS MIGHT HAVE SPOILERS.  I'm all caught up through Sunday's episode so if you're not....don't read this until you're caught up, well, unless you are brave, haha.

I have lots of thoughts, and I'm not going to go through the whole show here, at least not on this post :)

If I could ask a player some questions, it would be these:

  1.  Do HOH ever wish they could redo their nominations? Are they 100% sure when they nominate?
  2. Why do they hug after nominations? I get hugging nominees, but to hug everyone?  I dont get it.
  3. When does the food supply get replenished?

And here's my questions about this season so far

  1. What is Aaryn still doing there? No game play...granted that makes it easy to beat her I suppose.
  2. Not a question, but I wish the strong players weren't sent home already.  I keep saying that there aren't any strong players left but apparently there are because somebody masterminded the act of getting out Jeremy and Kaitlyn and oh,...the guy that Gina Marie was in love with... (that's another story)
  3. What's up with everyone hooking up? Think about it...there are/were like 4 couples in the house.  I remember back when there was a huge mix of ages and people and diversity....this season they're mostly young and single - except for Helen and Alyssa.
  4. Again, not a question - but I wish in the beginning it was longer than 1 hour so that we could see some more behind the scenes and get to know them a bit better.

3, If you were HOH this week who would you have nominated?

Blogger Mentor Needed: Part Duece

Okay, so this part 2 to my previous post in my quest to learning more about Blogger and the blogging community.  I'm looking for someone to answer these questions because the all knowing Google didn't help me enough.  :)

Here are some questions that have me stumped.

  1. How do y'all get items for giveaways? Like Target giftcards, or the AMAZING pencil sharpener, or packs of Scentos markers?  Are ya buying the items and then raffling them off?  I'd love to have a giveaway (to celebrate newbie blogger moments) but not sure how to get that ball rolling.
  2. Fonts.  I want to use some different fonts on the blog. But all my posts are boring Times.  In the writing part, there are maybe 7 options, all of which are boring.  Suggestions?
  3. Lastly (for now at least), I know how to show a blog roll of favorite blogs. Do you know if there is anyway to connect my blog to BlogLovin to pull the blogs I actually follow over to my blog roll instead of me typing every single URL into the widget?

Again -- thanks for the help. Feel free to leave comments (I love 'em!) or send me an email. Keep an eye open for Part Tres because I'm sure it's going.

Where do YOU turn when you need blog help? Any favorite tutorials online I haven't found??

A Facelift

Sooooo excited to have the blog get a facelift.  Even more proud because I did ALL OF IT. Which also means there are some imperfections but I learned a lot during this process.

Do you remember what the old blog looked like?

It was a pre-made template from somewhere on the blog. LOVED it too but once I saw another blog with it I started researching what it would take to do my own.  And viola here it is!  Notice I even figured out code enough to create my own blogger button on the side! Score!  Techno-nerd hubby has nothing on me!

I'd love some feedback (and some woohoos, haha) on the new look.  It definitely was a chore but I love it and it is all me.

Liebster Award!

I AM SOOOO EXCITED! Someone actually R.E.A.Ds this little blog!! Woohoo! Have I ever mentioned that I love comments? Knowing that someone out there is reading helps motivate me to write more often.

BUT on to the super duper exciting news:
I GOT NOMINATED FOR A LIEBSTER AWARD!
Yay!!  You have no idea how excited this made me. The wonderful Lindsey from Just Keep Teaching nominated me for this award.  Seriously..my husband was soo confused when I squealed and then wondered what I got for this award. Haha, I don't need any prize - recognition is enough!

So here's the questions that Lindsey asked me:
1. What is your favorite food EVER?
- oh my this one is tough. The favorite one EVER?  I can always go for my mom's old fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy.  I think its a comfort food that I can't replicate. I get pretty close but I think the key part is having mom cook it for me :)

2. Have you ever gone on vacation somewhere you didn't want to come back from?
- We just went to Cozumel this past month. It was great.  Not necessarily because it was Cozumel but because it was me and the husband. That's it. Just us.  Not the 2 kids, not any family, not friends. Just us. We did what we wanted and when we wanted to. Don't get me wrong, we were ready to come home and see the girls and get back on schedule but it was probably the best vacation so far, and extra relaxing.

3. What is your biggest accomplishment in life so far?
- I think it would just be that I am where I am. As many times as I tried to make it my own plans, God had a hand in it and it has turned out so much better than I could have ever imagined. Two beautiful girls, amazing husband that fully supports me, a family that puts up with my craziness, and a job I absolutely love.

4. If you had the choice to shop anywhere with unlimited budget- where would you go?
- I probably should say something like IKEA or somewhere fancy. But to be honest I think I could do a lot of damage at Target.  Everything for the house AND school AND the clothes are pretty cute.

5. What is your greatest piece of advice to new teachers?

- Build relationships with someone that is well respected and "successful" in your building. That person will (hopefully) teach you about time management, planning, new ideas, dealing with coworkers/parents/teachers/etc, and how to become a master teacher.

6. What did you want to be when you were little?
- A dolphin trainer, no joke!

7. What do you do in your spare time?
- I recently started blogging....and that takes up what spare time I'm able to find. I have THREE blogs, wait, 4.   This one, one for my kiddos, She's Got Goals (my fitness journey blog) and then Another Beautiful Day which is our family blog.  Yeah, I believe I'm crazy somedays and unsure what what I got myself into.

8. Mac or PC?
- I've never touched a Mac.

9. Flying or driving?
- Depends on the distance :) I don't mind flying at all but a good road trip is just as great with the right company!

10. One word to describe your personality:
-Fiesty

And so with that, here are my nominees :

#1: Christi and Marci at Saddle Up for 2nd Grade!

#2: Kristin at A Teeny Tiny Teacher

A Teeny Tiny Teacher

#3.  Ms Chrissy B at Buzzing with Ms B

#4. Lindsey at For the Love of First Grade

#5 Melissa at Jungle Learners

My questions....
1. What is one thing you would change from this past year?
2. What the best meal recipe that you can actually make?
3. Looking into your closet, what color do you see most? What do you think that says about you?
4. Did you move to your current town or have you been there your whole life?
5. Favorite cookie?
6. What's the one household chore you absolutely loathe?
7. What's your favorite TV show and why?
8. Best gift you've received?
9. What does your classroom look like, once it's in full swing?
10. Describe your job in 10 words.

Taking Mentor Applications

Clearly I've figured out blogger.  I know how to write a post, add pics, link to other sites.  I have even made my own linky button (proud moment there). But here are some questions I have. Feel free to answer in the comments (have I mentioned I love comments?) or send me an email.  If you would love to actually be my go-to person for blogging help or even classroom connecting, send me an email. :)

So, the more involved I get with the blogging community, the more I realize I need help.  And one of my BIGGEST pieces of advice I have for new teachers is to find a mentor.  The mentor can guide you as you need through your first year and help you find what works and what doesn't, teaching you the ins and outs of the building community you are now a part of.    Well...I'm taking my own advice in a sense and looking for a blogging buddy to help me figure out some of the "what seems like" blogging basics.

Here we go...this what I know that I don't know, yet:
  1. Post a link in someone else's comments.  If I'm responding on someone else's blog and want to link to one of my posts, how do I do that without putting the entire link? For instance, how do I link the whole url to a single word in a comment. *I know how to do that in my own posts, just not in comments*
  2. This is similar I guess....but when I DO leave comments elsewhere, I want to leave my blog address but not have the whole stinking thing showing.  I'd like it to say Cantrell's Got Class and then it link back to here. And once I figure that out, is there a shortcut or do i have to type it every single time?
  3. How do I create my own blog button to have posted on my sidebar with the HTML so that it links back to my site?
  4. For those that have purchased a blogger design, how much input did you have? I have no idea what color scheme etc I would want yet would want it to reflect me.  Just curious.
  5. I have a few blogger specific questions (line justification issues, fonts, etc), example: when I added teh Newbie Blogger pic, the text all above it went smaller and indented...how do i fix THAT?!?

And I suppose that's it...for now.  Expect part 2,3,4....etc until I get it allll figured out :)
Again, feel free to leave your answer in the comment or email me.  Thanks a bunch!

What do YOU do when you have blogger questions and Google isn't much help??

Monday Made It Linky

Now that I've gotten supplies and the ideas and the time...seems like I've been crafting a lot. Or maybe it's teh only teacherly thing I can do to that doesn't involve curriculum planning, I'm not sure.

Linking up with the weekly Monday Made-It over at 4th Grade Frolics today!

So for this link up I'm working on something I saw a friend post on facebook last month.  I decided I wanted something similar and so I jumped in and did my own version.

It's a student check-in/out system.  Each student in my class has a class number which is wrtten on a magnet.  As they leave the room (nurse, reading recovery, SPED, etc) they'll move their magnet to the appropriate section on the board. SO SIMPLE!  this way when we have our lock-down drills or fire drills I know where each kiddo is without having to think toooo hard.  Dont judge the undone-ness of the the labels, I still don't know who some of our new teachers are and will eventually print in some amazing font then tape onto the board.

I'l probably hang mine on the inside of the door or maybe on the wall next to it, not sure yet. If you make one, let me know!

Directions: Use E6000 glue to adhere mini magnet to back of flat marble. Use Sharpie or mini-duct tape to create lines. Cover edges with duct tape and hang!

See? Super easy :)
How do YOU manage kiddos leaving the room so often?  I'm thinking this will be great!

Head to 4th grade frolics and check out other nifty projects for teh week!
